What is Deeny

Deeny is a Muslim prayer app for iPhone and Android. Prayer times, reminders, the Qibla and Today's Sūrahs are free. Deeny Pro locks the apps you choose at each adhan until you confirm you have prayed, and adds the Fajr alarm, Istiqāma and the prayer tracker after your first two days.

    You pick the apps. Calls, messages and maps stay open unless you choose them.

  2. The adhan locks them

    At each prayer you switch on, your phone's built-in controls close them. Nothing to set each day.

  3. Open one, and it waits

    A locked app shows one screen: pray first. Deeny itself stays open, with the Qibla a tap away.

  4. Pray, then give your word

    Hold I prayed for one second, then give your oath. The apps open until the next adhan.

Most prayer apps are free because you're not the customer — advertisers are. Here's the pattern, documented and now regulated:

  1. 2020How the model plays outIn 2020, a Motherboard investigation documented one widely-used prayer app, Muslim Pro, carrying an ad SDK that sent granular location data to the data broker X-Mode — which separately sold location data to clients that included U.S. military contractors.1Their response: Muslim Pro called the reports “incorrect and untrue,” said the data it shared with partners was anonymized, and cut ties with X-Mode.2
  2. 2021The same pattern recursA 2021 report documented another prayer app, Salaat First, whose integration sent users' location data to the broker Predicio — a link its developer confirmed on the record — where it entered a supply chain connected to a U.S. government contractor.3Their response: The developer said he expected the data to be anonymized for ads and ended the arrangement in December 2020.3
  3. 2021What oversight askedIn 2021, 18 members of the U.S. House of Representatives asked the Defense Department and the Director of National Intelligence to investigate reports that the U.S. military purchased location data harvested from apps used by Muslims.5
  4. 2024What regulators didIn January 2024, the FTC reached its first settlement barring a data broker — X-Mode and its successor Outlogic — from selling sensitive location data that could reveal visits to clinics, places of worship, and shelters. The order names the broker, not any prayer app, and was settled by consent with no admission of wrongdoing.4

None of this needed a data breach — it's simply how the ad-funded model works. Deeny is committed to the opposite: no ads, no data brokers, no sign-up — and by policy, your data is never sold.

Answers before you ask

Deeny gets a full year of prayer times from the Aladhan prayer-times service, using your approximate location and an established calculation method: Muslim World League, ISNA, Umm al-Qura, and more. The year is then cached on your device. Pick the method your local mosque follows under Settings → Prayer times.

Yes. No ads, no tracking across apps or websites, and we never sell your data. No sign-up: no name, no email, no password; Deeny signs you in anonymously. Your prayer journal and streaks stay on your phone. Our servers in the EU keep a small anonymous profile, usage events only if you agree (deleted after 90 days), and your Fajr-alarm photo for the check (deleted after 30 days). The privacy policy has the details.

Deleting the app removes everything stored on your phone. To delete what our servers keep, email deenytracker@gmail.com or write from Settings › Send feedback, which carries your anonymous ids so we can find your data. Turning usage events off in Settings › Privacy deletes them.

Yes. Deleting Deeny lifts every lock, and nothing stops you. It is a commitment you make, not a cage. What it costs you is the few seconds of deciding to do it, at the moment you were about to open Instagram anyway.

You choose which apps lock, so calls, messages and maps stay open unless you add them. The prayer screen also carries an Emergency unlock.

You are not swearing to Deeny. The words are yours and the app cannot check them: it only keeps the door shut until you say you have prayed. Before your first oath, Deeny explains what an oath by Allah means. And if you did not pray, you can say so, with no oath asked.
